Kitchen Tools needed for this Pulled Pork Sandwich recipe.
- Sauté pan
- Spatula
- Bread knife
- Chef’s knife
Step-by-Step Cooking Directions for Pulled Pork Sandwich:
- Begin by slicing the ciabatta in half with your serated bread knife. Take care to use proper knife technique, ensure your knife is adequately sharp, and perform your cuts on a stable, clean surface.
- Next, shred or dice 4 to 6 ounces of cooked pulled pork. You may complete this step using your hands to simply shred the pulled pork into small pieces. See the video below.
- In your cold sauté pan, add 3Tbsp butter, and turn your cook top to medium high heat. As the pan heats up and the butter melts, take care so that the butter does not burn. Turn your cook top heat down if the butter begins to smoke.
Always be careful not to burn butter in a hot pan.
- Now place the ciabatta slices inside-down into your hot, buttered pan. Allow the bread to toast for a few minutes; it should develop a rich, golden color with toasted edges. Once toasted, remove the bread from heat and set aside.
Toasted ciabatta creates an exceptional crunchy texture.
- In the hot sauté pan, you may add your diced/shredded pulled pork. Sauté the pork until it gets hot and begins to develop seared edges.
Searing the pork adds a crispy texture.
- Add ¼C barbecue sauce to the pan, and toss the pulled pork in the pan to thoroughly coat the meat in sauce. Once adequately coated, remove the pan from heat.
Adding barbecue sauce intensifies the flavor of the pork.
- Simply place your BBQ pulled pork onto the toasted ciabatta bread, serve and enjoy. Coleslaw or a side of yam fries go great with this dish.
Serve with yam fries or a side of choice.
Types of Pork
Heritage Pig Breeds
Heritage pigs are a breed of pig that is not cross-bread with other breeds. These breeds include Berkshire, Red Wattle, and Duroc. These pigs have darker meat with richer flavor, juiciness, and marbling. The benefit to using these breeds of pig is there is no need to brine them or add marinades/sauces for tenderness since they come with so much flavor and juices naturally.
Non-Heritage Pig Breeds
Non-heritage pork refers to pork that comes from pig breeds that are not considered heritage breeds, meaning they are typically commercially bred pigs raised for rapid growth and lean meat production, often with less flavor and marbling. If cooking with this more common type of pork a brine is best.
